New York ranks fourth in the nation in solar technology jobs, according to an annual report from the Solar Foundation. The state has more more than 8,000 postions in the field.
The industry’s growth is due to a substantial increase in residential installations, according to the report.
Non-resident and utility installations also contributed to the skyrocket.
The Solar Foundation predicts New York will expand at a similar rate next year.
They say solar jobs have grown annually by at least 20 percent nationwide. Though the number of jobs is steadily increasing, New York State employees are among the lowest paid in the industry, with most installation jobs paying on average $18 an hour.
A small percentage of these jobs are located in Binghamton, with the majority of positions offered in the New York City area.
In January, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced a plan to have 50 percent of the state’s energy come from renewable resources by 2030.
The foundation received the data by calling employers around the state.
