Yellow Flashing Arrows Help Move Traffic Along

Oct 2, 2017

ROCHESTER (WXXI) - You may have noticed a flashing yellow arrow at a number of intersections around upstate. Lori Maher spokesperson for the State Department of Transportation says we've had a few for about 5 years, but they are increasing their presence. She says they hope to improve traffic efficiency by giving drivers an extra few seconds to make those tricky turns.

"You will not have the right of way but instead of sitting there and waiting for a green light or being told you may go, you now have that option and it is up to you."

The newest one of these flashing yellow lights is on Buffalo Road in Gates.

Mahar reminds people that pedestrians crossing still have the right-of-way over left turning vehicles.

Flashing yellow lights are operating in about a dozen local lights, and will only be installed at the busiest intersections.
