Some residents on the north side of Binghamton are worried they’re losing one of the few places they had to buy groceries, now that the Kmart is closing.

There hasn’t been a grocery store on the north side in 20 years. Many residents find a way to shop at the Weis a mile and a half away on the east side of town.

Otherwise, they buy groceries at gas stations or the Family Dollar. The Kmart has also functioned as a sort of stand-in.

(WRVO) Local and state labor groups rallied in the Village of Liverpool outside of Syracuse Tuesday for a $15 an hour minimum wage in upstate New York. The state approved an increase to the minimum wage earlier this year that will bump it up to $12.50 an hour in upstate in five years. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he eventually wants upstate to reach $15 an hour.

Two companies will bring 600 jobs in Western New York and the Southern Tier. That according to New York Senator Charles Schumer, who says Pioneer and ConServe have been awarded federal contracts to help the IRS collect unpaid taxes.

Construction started Tuesday at Tioga Downs on the hotel and spa management hopes will pamper thousands of future visitors.

The move comes one week after the New York State Gaming Commission officially granted a casino license to Tioga Downs.
