NY Makes 'Substantial' Changes To Standardized Tests

SYRACUSE (WRVO) - Testing season has begun in schools across New York state. It’s unclear how many students will join the opt-out movement this year, but state officials said they have tried to answer some of the concerns from parents and teachers that spawned the movement. 

HARRISBURG (WSKG) -- School property taxes are a perennial issue in Harrisburg. And while attempts to curtail or get rid of them entirely routinely fizzle out, a bill making modest changes is moving through the Senate.

Contingent faculty at Ithaca College and the administration have reached a contract agreement after months of negotiations. Contingent faculty are non-tenure track faculty. Both faculty and the administration said they're generally pleased with the agreement.

ROCHESTER (WXXI) - Leaders of the opt-out movement say they're still not pleased with New York state's Common Core-based tests and the pressures they place on students and teachers.

In final negotiations yesterday, the Ithaca College administration agreed to all the demands of the non-tenure track faculty union

"The union just literally won on everything," said Chris Machanoff, Organizing Director with SEIU Local 200United, in an email.

SYRACUSE (WRVO) - The number of students who are choosing to enter the education profession is declining. SUNY, which trains 25 percent of the New York’s educators, is trying to address the issue because the state's school districts are now seeing a shortage of qualified teachers.

Every child in Pennsylvania is offered an education through their local school district, but not every district is able to provide the same opportunities. A lot depends on the where the student lives.

The  New York State Legislature has re-elected two members of the Board of Regents including Vice Chancellor, and Rochester attorney, T. Andrew Brown, as well as Regent Nan Eileen Mead.
