Overview
A social media creator, Sara Gilson, was shot dead in what police say appears to be a murder-suicide involving her estranged husband, Jeremiah “Shawn” Duffey. The case drew attention because Gilson had recently accused Duffey of sexually abusing a minor and had publicly named him on TikTok.
What was posted online
Gilson, who had a sizable following on TikTok, posted a video in mid-July accusing her husband of pedophilia and using a tongue-in-cheek documentary trend to make the claim. The post amplified an already tense situation between the two and brought her allegations to a broader audience.
Earlier allegations and jurisdiction issues
Police say the alleged inappropriate touching was first reported in early June by a player and a parent after an event at an elementary school where Duffey coached a travel basketball team. Another coach reportedly intervened and reported what he saw. Authorities say similar complaints had been made about the coach across state lines prior to this report.
Because the school incident occurred on tribal land and Duffey was a member of the Osage Nation, the investigation was forwarded to federal prosecutors, which shifted legal jurisdiction away from local police.
Protective order and immediate fallout
After the June report, Gilson obtained an emergency protective order that required Duffey to stay a set distance from her and her home. The order was granted the day after the initial complaint, and law enforcement had provided Gilson with information on how to pursue that protection.
The deadly confrontation
Weeks after the allegations and shortly after Gilson’s public TikTok post, officers responded late at night to a domestic disturbance call in Collinsville. Dispatch reportedly heard a woman screaming and then what sounded like a gunshot. A child later called 911 from a neighbor’s house to say his stepfather had shot his mother. When police arrived, both Gilson and Duffey were found dead of apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators say the scene looks like a murder-suicide, and the probe is ongoing.
Aftermath for the family
Gilson’s young son was briefly taken into protective custody and later released to another family member not involved in the incident. Gilson is remembered by supporters as a devoted mother who worked hard for her children and hoped to give them a better life.
