What went down
Federal and local officials say a huge paper-products warehouse in Ontario, California — a 1.2 million-square-foot facility — caught fire after someone deliberately set multiple blazes inside. The warehouse, which handled goods for a well-known consumer brand, was heavily damaged and the flames spread quickly.
Who’s accused
Authorities arrested 29-year-old Chamel Abdulkarim of Highland. Prosecutors say he worked for a third-party distributor that staffed the facility and that he allegedly filmed himself starting fires on pallets of paper during a morning shift.
What he reportedly said and posted
Investigators say Abdulkarim uploaded videos showing flames taking hold and allegedly taunted the company, with comments along the lines of “All you had to do was pay us enough to live.” He allegedly followed up with a text to a co-worker repeating the same grievance about pay and corporate priorities, and — in a move that baffled reporters — compared himself to someone named Luigi Mangione during a phone call.
People and damage
At least 20 people were reportedly in the building when the fires started; officials say there were no injuries. Initial estimates put the value of the paper products at around $500 million and the building itself at roughly $150 million, and one state charge notes the damage topped $10.1 million.
Charges and possible penalties
Federal authorities charged Abdulkarim with arson of a structure used in interstate and foreign commerce — a crime that carries a mandatory minimum of five years in prison and can go up to 20 years. State prosecutors added one count of aggravated arson plus several other arson counts tied to each of the alleged fires; the aggravated arson charge includes a special-circumstances enhancement and can bring a penalty of 10 years to life.
What’s next
Court officials expected the accused to be arraigned on the state charges on Friday. Investigations are ongoing as officials continue to sort through video evidence, messages, and damage estimates — and as everyone tries to figure out who Luigi Mangione is and why he came up in a phone call during a warehouse blaze.
