Smyrna Apartment Fire Damages 12 Units, Displaces Residents Amid Water Supply Challenges

Smyrna apartment fire damages 12 units, displaces residents as crews battle water supply challenges

What happened

Midday calm met chaos when a fire erupted at an apartment building in Smyrna. Crews got the call shortly after 1 p.m. and found flames roaring on the second floor that climbed up into the third and even into the roof. The building is at 539 Woodsong Way.

Firefighting and evacuation

Firefighters moved quickly and got residents out of the upper floors — no dramatic leaps from balconies, thankfully. Crews focused on getting the blaze under control and then working methodically to snuff out remaining hot spots into the afternoon.

Damage tally

In total, 12 apartment units were affected. Eight of those units were heavily damaged, and four others suffered significant smoke and water damage. Despite the size of the incident, there were no reported injuries — a small win on a rough day.

Water supply hurdles

Things weren’t totally smooth for the firefighting team. They ran into trouble getting enough water directly at the scene, so crews improvised by stretching extra hose lines across the street to a neighboring property to tap into more supply. It was a workaround that helped them keep fighting the flames.

Who’s displaced

The exact number of people who had to leave their homes wasn’t immediately clear. The apartment complex said it has some vacant units it can use to temporarily house those affected, so everyone should have a roof over their head for the short term — just maybe not their own roof for now.

What’s next

The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined yet and investigators are looking into it. Meanwhile, firefighters and building staff continue cleanup and safety checks so residents can eventually return to their homes.
