Quick recap
Early Saturday morning something went wrong at UAB’s Football Operations Building: two players were hurt and another student was taken into custody. Local officials have described the event as a stabbing, and the university says the two injured athletes are in stable condition while they recover.
Who’s been named
University spokespeople did not provide player names, but county records show that a UAB student, Daniel Israel Mincey, was booked into Jefferson County Jail Saturday afternoon on charges including aggravated assault and attempted murder. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether those charges are directly tied to the injuries.
Official response and privacy
The school’s communications team emphasized privacy and an active investigation, so details are limited. A UAB representative said they won’t comment further while patient confidentiality and law enforcement work continue.
Emergency crews on scene
Birmingham Fire Rescue confirmed crews responded to a reported stabbing that morning and transported two people to the hospital. Beyond that, officials released little additional information.
Game-time decision
Despite the incident, the UAB Blazers went ahead with their scheduled game against the South Florida Bulls that day. The team ultimately fell short on the scoreboard, and several players—understandably—opted not to suit up.
Coach’s take
Interim head coach Alex Mortensen said the squad collectively wanted to play, but some teammates chose to sit out. He stressed that the program’s top priority is its student-athletes’ health and access to support, and he praised the team for rallying so seniors could finish the season.
