Atlanta Duo Revives Neighborhoods with Free Lawn Care

Atlanta Duo Mows Down Neglect — One Yard at a Time

What’s the deal with Drake Lawn Care?

Meet Jarvis Drake and Diamond Owens — a husband-and-wife team who turned lawnmowing into a neighborhood superpower. A few years back they started Drake Lawn Care with a simple idea: find folks who really need yard help and give it away. No strings, no invoices, just elbow grease and a trailer full of tools.

Who they help (and why it matters)

Their target list reads like the people your neighborhood association forgets: elderly neighbors, residents with disabilities, and anyone struggling financially or physically to keep up with yard work. If a property’s so overgrown it’s flirting with a city code violation — and the homeowner might lose the place — Jarvis and Diamond step in.

A job becomes personal

One recent project was a seriously overgrown lot around a long-family-owned house in south Atlanta. The house belongs to Renee Davis, whose family memories live in that yard even though a fire years ago left the home uninhabited. Renee’s mom thought her insurance was paid; it wasn’t, and they couldn’t rebuild. After the fire, Renee went through chemotherapy and radiation — which she has now beaten — but between treatment, a fixed income, and property taxes, yard upkeep was impossible.

Why Jarvis couldn’t say no

When Renee reached out, the job hit Jarvis in the feels. His own mother died of sarcoma after chemo in 2014, so hearing Renee had beaten cancer pulled at him. Add that he grew up in the neighborhood, and this wasn’t just lawn work — it was neighbors helping neighbors. Diamond says giving back was always her idea, and Jarvis found his way to do it.

The transformation (and the cost)

The couple spent just under a week on that yard and made it look like a different property. They call the work “free,” but the bills tell another story — they shelled out just under $1,000 out-of-pocket for equipment, fuel, and time. For them, though, the payoff wasn’t money: it was the reaction from the family and the relief of keeping someone’s home out of hot water with the city.

Small kindness, big returns

Diamond puts it simply: a little time and a little kindness go a long way and come back even more. Jarvis and Diamond hope more people will notice the neighborly needs around them and pitch in however they can.
