The Incident
What started as a reckless-driving report on Interstate 10 near New Orleans morphed into one of those stories you’d think was made up. State police say a Toyota Supra that had been barreling down I-10 hit a concrete barrier and blew a tire, then ended up being pursued into neighboring St. Charles Parish.
When troopers stopped the car, the driver — identified by authorities as 40-year-old Victor Rivas of Montz — showed signs of impairment. Instead of cooperating, police say he bolted.
Into the Swamp (Yes, Really)
Rivas allegedly leapt from an elevated stretch of Interstate 310 and plunged into the marsh below. He was later seen walking along Highway 61, but he ran off again and disappeared into swampy terrain. That’s where nature decided to join the drama: state police report that an alligator bit him, leaving him with arm injuries.
He Kept Running — Through Pain
Even after the gator encounter and after receiving treatment for arm injuries at a hospital, police say Rivas kept trying to make a getaway. Eventually, troopers located and arrested him. Law enforcement credited drone technology with helping to find and secure him in the marshy area.
Charges, Custody and Details
Rivas was booked into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center in Killona. His arrest records list multiple allegations: driving while intoxicated, resisting arrest, and being a fugitive from Jefferson Parish. Officials also say he faces outstanding warrants in Jefferson Parish for hit-and-run and careless driving. Bond was set at $17,500, and it was not immediately known whether he has legal representation.
The Takeaway (and a Reminder from the Troopers)
State police used this bizarre sequence of events to underscore a simple point: impaired driving can spiral into unpredictable — and painful — consequences. Also, pro tip: if you try to outrun the law in Louisiana swampland, you may get a new roommate with teeth.
