Atlanta Hawks and Volunteers Unite to Pack Over One Million Meals for Georgia Families

Hawks and Volunteers Pack Over a Million Meals for Georgia Families

Big packing party at State Farm Arena

Over the weekend, the Atlanta Hawks and thousands of volunteers turned State Farm Arena into a high-energy assembly line and packed more than one million meals. Think less stadium roar, more cafeteria choreography — everyone scooping, sealing and stacking like their lives depended on Tetris skills.

Where the food is headed

The meals are being sent to food banks and community partners throughout metro Atlanta. The Atlanta Community Food Bank took about a third of the total — roughly 38,000 pounds, which translates to around 300,000 individual meal packs. Some of those jambalaya-style meals will travel as far as Floyd, Heard and Union counties.

How it gets into hands quickly

The food bank doesn’t hold onto donations for long. Local partner agencies place orders for what they need, and the food is shipped straight to them for distribution. In fact, staff said that the shipment they received was all reserved by partner organizations within a few hours of arrival — a reminder of just how fast the need moves.

Who benefits and how long it helps

Each meal pack is designed to help stretch a family’s food supply — organizers estimate a set of these meals can feed a household for about a week. Distribution to families is expected to begin within a week of the packing event, so the relief should start showing up in pantries and neighborhood programs very soon.

Why this matters (spoiler: it’s kind of a big deal)

Large-scale volunteer efforts like this do more than just fill boxes; they move food into communities that need it now. Getting food from a warehouse shelf into a neighbor’s hands requires coordination, speed and partners on the ground — and this event helped all three. If you want to help in the future, keep an eye on local food bank volunteer opportunities or donate to community distribution programs.
